CoolSculpting vs. VASERlipo: Which is For Me?

CoolSculpting and liposuction are both fat-removal procedures that can help contour your body and give you a slimmer, more toned figure. They can both help complete your fitness journey by excising fat deposits that diet and exercise alone can’t eliminate. However, which procedure best meets your needs?

At the Center for Plastic Surgery at Castle Rock, we perform both advanced VASERlipo from board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Rhee and CoolSculpting from our medspa. We’re proud to be the only practice between Denver and Colorado Springs to offer CoolSculpting. Here’s a breakdown of what each procedure entails.

What Areas Can CoolSculpting and VASERlipo Treat?

These procedures can eliminate fat in areas such as:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Flanks
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Arms

It’s important to note that neither of these treatments are weight-loss procedures. You should be at your target weight before you undergo either of them. They can be the culmination of your weight-loss journey by removing the stubborn deposits of fat that diet and exercise won’t get rid of.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that uses a process known as cryolipolysis to freeze and destroy fat cells. Our specialists will place the CoolSculpting applicator over the treatment area. It will cool your fat, and your dead fat cells will be naturally filtered out by your liver over the following weeks. The procedure lasts about one hour.

Because CoolSculpting is non-surgical and non-invasive, you should be able to resume your routine immediately after treatment. You may experience mild redness and discomfort in the days following CoolSculpting, but those should dissipate quickly. Your results will become apparent in a few weeks as your body filters out your fat cells through your liver.

Fat cells eliminated through CoolSculpting will never return. You can gain fat in other areas, though, so it’s essential to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet to maintain your results.

How Does VASERlipo Work?

VASERlipo is ultrasound-assisted liposuction that is much less invasive than traditional liposuction and allows for a far shorter recovery. As with the conventional procedure, during VASERlipo, a thin tube called a cannula is inserted through an incision into the treatment area.

Unlike traditional lipo, VASERlipo can be performed in smaller areas with a local anesthetic. After Dr. Rhee inserts the cannula into your incisions, he’ll use ultrasound energy to break down your fat and make its removal through the cannula far easier. This minimizes the trauma, bleeding, swelling, and bruising that occurs with conventional lipo.

After VASERlipo, many of Dr. Rhee’s patients can return to their routine in just a few days. Because it does not cause swelling to the degree that traditional lipo does, results after VASERlipo become apparent much more quickly. As with CoolSculpting, your fat won’t come back, but you can still gain it in other areas of your body if you don’t eat healthily and exercise regularly.
